B-Block Classes: What to bring!

For Monday you will need the following:

A Group:  Will be meeting with Profs. Gill and Green in the Harder Hall studio. Please bring all materials as requested.  Please see blog for materials you were required to bring back after break.

B Group:  Will be meeting with Profs. Vajda and To on the main floor of the Cohen Studio.  Please bring all of your erasers and a package of charcoal and your drawing boards.  We will be drawing outside for part of the class period so please dress appropriately for the weather.

Letter from your past self?

Letters_to_futureOn the first day of school you were asked to write a letter to your future self! On the day of the Foundations Exhibition I mailed them out across the country!

Did you get it? Did it strike a cord with your present self? If so, please share your thoughts with me and I will share them here on the blog!

REVIEW SCHEDULE

It’s Final Review Time. Please show up 15 minutes early to set up your portfolio in the area you are assigned. Take time setting up to present your work in the best possible way. This may mean that you must fix, retouch or cleanup artworks. Reviews are are important, required of all students, and will not be rescheduled.

As we near the end of your first year….

So what will these last weeks look like? Well, you’ll be finishing up your classes next week and then we’ll have three days of reviews followed by a big huge clean up of the studios. Then we will all work together to hang the exhibition. Then… the OPENING. I’ve put it all together with some dates and times below!

April 22-26 FINAL WEEK OF LABS

April 24 WEDNESDAY, Ryonji Drawing with Prof. Andrew  Bring all required materials! Location to be announced.

April 25 (TH) Based in Truth: Alfred Stories 7:00-8:30 Alfred Village Hall, All Invited!

April 29 – May 1 (M-W) REVIEWS    You will have one 15 minute review time with faculty. Please arrive early and put work on the wall under your number. The schedules ARE POSTED in HARDER.

May 2 (TH) REQUIRED CLEAN UP! Attendance will be taken. Anyone not arriving on time and staying until end will not be allowed to show work.

May 3 (F) INSTALLATION  All students required to attend and participate.

May 4 (S) 1-4, 2013 Year End Celebration and Exhibition!

russia-georgia-mapProfessor Andrew Deutsch will be working with you to create a Ryonji Drawing following John Cage’s score. And the amazing news is that the works you create will be exhibited at the National Gallery in Tbilisi Georgia!

You’ll need to bring to class:

12 stones, each should be about the size of your palm or smaller.
a BUNCH of “not dusty” drawing materials – NO chalk or dusty stuff. Water colors are okay, Sharpies not so good. The more drawing materials the better.
one or two sheets of 12 in x 12 in paper
6 sided dice (one or two).
a ruler or straight edge

YOUR First International Exhibition! (or at least for most of you!)

“I would like each student to bring back a one square foot box of objects that they have collected: organic, man made, fabric etc. These objects will be destroyed so nothing valuable. We will be using these objects for the length of the work shop so PLEASE make good decisions.”

Please bring the following back from break. Note that some of these materials are already part of the materials you need to replenish in your art kit or may cross over with other course lists.

  • 1 set of acrylic paints (5-10 colors?)
  • 1 set of paint brushes
  • 4 packs of hot glue sticks
  • 1 glue gun
  • 1 box cutter+1 set of blades
  • 1 xacto knife+2 sets of blades
  • 1 pack of 100 sheets inkjet photo paper
  • sketch book
  • 10 rolls of masking tape

This LAB class will explore issues of photographic images and the construction of a reality as it applies to those images.  To that end students in this class will be engaging in the production of photographic images and the construction of the subject matter to be photographed.  In addition to the above listed materials we ask that you bring the following back with you to campus:

  • 5 photographs from home: choose portraits of yourself, family members, friends.  Try to choose images that span a length of time, i.e. some historical photos, some contemporary photos.  If you feel uncomfortable bringing in the original a good quality reproduction is acceptable.
  • A camera – can be any of the following: Point and shoot digital, Digital SLR, iPhone (or any cell phone with a good quality camera).
  • USB download cable
  • Magazines for collaging
  • Fabric for making sets ( can be any scrap fabric, old clothes etc you have at home)

FOR THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS:  Bring 10 high quality color prints of paintings from history. You need to print the image, rather than just saving images on your laptop.   For the best color reproduction, print the images on glossy paper.Try to find paintings you think show DEPTH.  The images should clear and be as large as you can find, 8.5×11 would be ideal.  Spend some time looking at and finding paintings by different artists, from different time periods and from different art movements.

coLAB (both sections)

coLABlogoHello! For your coLAB workshops this spring we are asking that you do a small homework and bring back some materials. This is for all sections of the course. See below!

Homework: (listen to stories, write a story)
We are going to working on reading, writing and telling stories. What is a good story? How do you tell a good story? Take some time and listen to some great stories told live. One of the best places to start is the MOTH, True Stories Told Live. They can be found here: http://themoth.org/.

Many of you are also fans of This American Life, Story Corps, or Radio Diaries. Or maybe you like to laugh, here’s a nice little collection of comedians telling stories… at LaughSPIN.

I laughed out loud at the one about Taylor Dane…

Bring to the first day of the BEST story that you heard from listening to the above podcasts and the BEST story that you can write and tell that is based on a REAL situation. These can be serious, funny, odd or simply show the nature of people and places. The story you write does not have to be taken from your life, but it should be based on a TRUE story. So if you don’t have a good story to share, then you’ll need to ask others to share one with you! Maybe set up your own MOTH storytelling evening!

Materials:                                                                                                                                               At least 2 yds. of fabric, fur or leather.
Funky used clothes, with interesting patterns, hats, children’s jeans, button-up shirts or coats.
A few pieces of foam, cardboard rolls, or other durable materials to build upon                           Thread, cord, embellishments
Needles, fabric glue, good fabric scissors
OPTIONAL Sewing machine (if you have one and want to bring along. There will be some available.)

A Call for Entries!

Julie Verdone and Jessica Detweiler are curating a show of works on paper that will open in the Robert C Turner Gallery on March 6th, 2013. They would like to encourage freshmen to apply!

“In Sight” is a student curated show of works on paper juried by Kathy Vadja. It will open in the Turner Gallery on March 6th, 2013. Drop off for entries will be on Monday, Feb. 25th from 12pm-3pm and 6pm-9pm at the Turner Gallery. The show is limited to works on paper made by hand (photography is not eligible). Entries are limited to three works per person. For more information or to arrange an alternate drop off time, please contact Jessica Detweiler (JKD1@alfred.edu) or Julie Verdone (JMV4@alfred.edu).

tumblr_mi5d7fYbUF1rsao10o1_1280Hello Freshmen class, I would like to extend an invitation to a workshop event I am putting on for the next two Wednesdays called ‘Movement.’ During the session we will work on the challenge of drawing and articulating a moving figure model. There is a few different formats for modeling over the course of the session, each is performed with music to pace and inspire both the model and the illustrators. Movement has been described as an interesting challenge but mostly as lots of fun, so come join some alumni, upperclassmen and a professor or two for this exciting event!
