From the Writing Center

The Writing Center provides free writing assistance to all Alfred University students, faculty, and staff. Our eight student tutors represent a range of disciplines, including English, communications, psychology, Spanish, chemistry, biology, and fine art. Tutors are trained to deal with all kinds of writing tasks. Whether you need help discovering ideas, organizing information, revising a final draft, or preparing technical documents, the Writing Center can help you improve your writing abilities and gain confidence as a writer. The Center is located upstairs in Herrick Library in the Center for Academic Success. We also have Sunday and evening hours on the first floor of Herrick. You can make an appointment at our website, my.alfred.edu/writing. Walk-ins are welcome, but priority is given to scheduled appointments.

How to use the Writing Center:

  • Sign up for an appointment at alfred.edu/writing. We welcome walk-ins, but priority goes to students who have made an appointment.
  • Our standard appointments last 30 minutes. If you think you will need longer, sign up for two.
  • Please bring a copy of your writing assignment with you.
  • If you must cancel an appointment, you can do so on line up to one hour before the appointed time.
  • Questions or problems? Please contact the director, Vicky Westacott, at fcobb@alfred.edu.

The Writing Center is open Monday through Friday in Herrick Library 218 (in the Center for Academic Success) and Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings on the first floor of Herrick. Advising!

In the SoAD First Year Program, students will receive advising as a group on Wednesdays as well as during individually set up advising meetings prior to Spring registration and Sophomore registration. They also have access to three Advisors: Angie To, Katarina Riesing, and Michelle Illuminato. Once you arrive on campus, feel free to ask any of us for an appointment or to answer a question. We also will be having an advising session for those with specific issues during orientation week.

As you are packing up your bags and getting ready to come back to Alfred, take one last look at the materials lists that faculty have requested! It is much easier to get these supplies ANYWHERE other than Alfred. Safe Travels and see you on Tuesday!

Bring Back from HOME?

While at home please purchase or collect the following materials…

Group B, for Angie and John’s class, please see above for a link to the reading and please bring:
A 1 – 2  inch wide utility paint brush
A covered container that holds at least a quart of liquid to hold glue
Newspaper ( i.e 2 sunday papers worth )
Clay working tools ( if you have them)

Group B, for Jason and Will’s class ….Please restock your kits with:
vine charcoal
compressed charcoal
graphite sticks
erasers
sobo glue
white and black acrylic paint
blue painters tape
also: bring newspaper/newsprint/collage materials back from home

For Brett and Michelle’s STUDIO Research (the LINE) please bring a notebook and your laptop to class on Monday (if you have one.)

Hello All Students of the Line.

Tomorrow, Monday please make sure to bring with you:

all the materials that you collected, the photos, evidence of your investigations, and anything else that shows how you explored the line this week using your WORD as a lens.

Also bring your:

computers, (or digital images on a disk), color photo paper and any drawing/painting tools that you would like to use!
